Players who believe that variety is the spice of good games will be in nirvana here: one minute our hero is bungee jumping by a thread of mucus, the next he's riding a space-rocket through an asteroid belt. The game leans heavily on cockeyed humor, so steer clear if you've had it up to here with jokes about intestines, corporate lawyers and power-mad goldfish. Jim's arsenal is a bit on the skimpy side, although in the annals of video games the sight of an oversized annelid cracking his own head like a bullwhip is surely unique. The play control could use more polish, especially since most of the action involves running and jumping. A cross between the definitive puzzle game ITetris/I and the niche arcade classic IRampart/I, IFortress/I has plenty of substance, but doesn't take advantage of the Game Boy Advance's visual and aural capabilities. The game challenges players to construct towers from ITetris/I-like pieces, while simultaneously trying to destroy their opponent's structure and defending their own. p Players use a variety of weapons and units to achieve their aims. Twerps are the grunts of the game and come in two varieties: offensive and defensive. Offensive twerps attack your opponent, while defensive twerps help repair your structure. Wizards will summon monsters that can inflict massive damage to your enemy. Weaponry is dependent on which level you are playing--prehistoric, medieval, pirate, or space. Prehistoric weapons are primitive (rocks and slingshots), while space weapons are futuristic (plasma cannons). p There are three gameplay modes: battle, blitz, and tournament. Unfortunately, the modes are very similar and don't greatly affect the way you play the game. Single-player games are great for quick doses of addictive action, but two-player games through a link cable can be outstanding. The caveat is that the game's nuances might be difficult for some users to pick up. The manual does a fine job of defining everything that's in the game, but a poor job explaining how to tie it all together. An in-game tutorial would have helped immensely. While the graphics and sound won't dazzle anyone, this game is both addictive and deep--a winning combination for a puzzle game. I--Raymond M. The controls are simple, although strafing with the shoulder button takes some getting used to. Gameplay consists entirely of shooting enemies, finding objects, and unlocking doors. It's a wonderfully simple formula that will appeal to gamers of all ages. p It's far from a perfect game, though. The graphics pale in comparison to other Game Boy Advance launch titles--the early levels look particularly dull. The developers opted for assigning passwords after each level rather than letting players save their progress on the cartridge. The collision detection can be irksome--you'll swear that you've hit an enemy, only to watch him continue assaulting you.
